I seem to have some problems in searching for Crystal Shards in Open Space. I find plenty of ores, but they seemingly drop mostly Vanadium Ore and Impure Graphite. I intend to build the Palom Mk II starship on my primary Steam account (RyLeo154 if you want to know, but for some reason it can’t link directly to this forums page. It says “Expired session.” when I try), which requires 10 processing blocks (meaning a lot of computing chips are required). Out of 10 mined ore chunks (all of them in the Ontregos system), I found about 4 Vanadium Ores ("?!"), 2 Impure Osmium, 3 Impure Graphite and only 1 Crystal Shard. Is this just a glitch, or is this an imbalance? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
I was lucky finding more Crystal Shards in Pallas Border and another zone that can’t remember right now, but it was near Station Mendes too (maybe in Procssima system).
It depends on system you mine.
While I don’t know about the imperial systems, but starting from Federation there are systems that drop them more often. Destroyed station can be very hard zone (aliens basically need 1-2 balls to kill you) but ores there drop only graphite or crystals. Threshold drops only crystals with mobs that can also one shot you, but its more bearable.
Procssima sectors have specialised drops. Each one drops one particular ore. I’m sorry - I don’t remember which drops which (Lava Spines drops Graphite - that’s I am sure about).

But since he wants to build all-mighty Palom Mk.II, I’m sure he started not so long ago - he won’t survive there. Probably can’t even enter there due to clearance level.
Or even simplier buy a raw material container from the shop (under profile Icon) for 500.000 Cr. With that container you get 10 Units of every basic ressource. That’s the way I collected all ressources.
